ABALONE POACHERS ARRESTED
📍Jefferey’s Bay, Eastern Cape | 2024/01/26-27

On January 26th and 27th, 2024, members of the Kouga Abalone Task Team, in collaboration with NAVIC.Cloud, conducted waylay and patrol operations in known abalone poaching hotspots around the Jeffreys Bay area. Sea Fisheries also provided assistance with a rubber duck to target poachers operating from the ocean.

A highly visible approach was implemented to identify suspicious vehicles entering and leaving the area, which transitioned into waylay operations under the cover of darkness. During these operations, numerous divers engaged in abalone poaching were observed. A large group of over 30 individuals was identified as the primary target.

Members closely monitored the group's activities and movements, devising a plan to apprehend the poachers. With the rubber duck strategically positioned and communication maintained from the land, two suspects were apprehended while still underwater. Subsequently, another group of poachers attempted to flee across the beach, prompting a pursuit by the team. During the chase, confiscated abalone was recovered, totaling 168 de-shelled abalone and 6 shelled abalone.

The operation was deemed successful, thanks to the arrests, confiscations, and crime prevention patrols supported by all involved role players. Their collaborative efforts contribute significantly to the tight network of safety and security in Jeffreys Bay.

ILLEGAL ABALONE RECOVERED AND POACHERS ARRESTED
📍Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape | 2024/01/13 & 14

Members of the Kouga Abalone Task team, supported by NAVIC.Cloud, conducted waylay and patrol duties in known abalone poaching hotspots in the Jeffreys Bay area. Employing a highly visible approach initially, they targeted suspicious vehicles moving in and out of the area, later transitioning into waylay duties under the cover of darkness.

During these waylay duties, numerous divers engaged in abalone poaching were spotted. A specific group was identified as the primary target, prompting members to closely follow and monitor their activities. A strategic plan was developed to apprehend the poachers.

Upon initial contact, the divers managed to elude capture by swiftly retreating into the ocean. However, during the attempted capture, three bags filled with abalone and diving equipment were recovered. Subsequent observation led to the re-targeting of the same group. This time, one poacher was successfully apprehended, and an additional two bags filled with abalone were seized.

The following morning, yet another bag filled with abalone was discovered abandoned and subsequently confiscated. The overall operation was considered a success, encompassing arrests, confiscations, and effective crime prevention patrols.

ILLEGAL ABALONE RECOVERED
📍Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape | 2024/01/06 & 07

Members of the Kouga Abalone Task team, in collaboration with NAVIC.Cloud, were engaged in waylay and patrol duties in known abalone poaching areas around Jeffreys Bay. During patrols, attention was drawn to a vehicle crossing the causeway from Aston Bay to Paradise Beach, which had been previously flagged by NAVIC.Cloud for suspected abalone transport.

Following the vehicle, members observed five divers, outfitted in dive suits and carrying abalone poaching equipment, swiftly disembark and evade capture by running into the lagoon. The target vehicle then accelerated, initiating a hazardous high-speed chase through Paradise Beach and Aston Bay.

Support was requested from the Safer J'Bay group, leading to the mobilization of other police units and external role players, including security firms such as G4S, Exec Ops, Smhart, and Zibar. Local Law Enforcement also joined the effort. Despite attempts by Humansdorp SAPS to block the road entering Humansdorp, the suspect vehicle managed to bypass the blockade. However, in the Kwanomzamo area, the vehicle was involved in an accident, and the driver fled the scene on foot. The vehicle was successfully recovered.

In the aftermath of this incident, the task team, alongside local Neighborhood Watch (NHW), SAPS K9, and local Law Enforcement, continued their operation in Jeffreys Bay to locate and monitor abalone divers. Approximately 40 divers had been spotted earlier in the evening. Along the beach between Aston Bay and Pellsrus, a small group was identified and pursued. Although no arrests were made, the task team confiscated a bag containing 148 abalone.

The operation was considered a success, with the confiscations and crime prevention patrols aided by the collaborative efforts of external role players. This tight network of safety and security in Jeffreys Bay played a crucial role in the operation's effectiveness.
